Our program covers up to two hair loss medications, including the highly effective oral medication Finasteride. Finasteride works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to DHT, which is responsible for androgenic balding. It’s been shown to be successful in both receding hairlines and overall balding.
While lotions, creams, and sprays may not be successful due to low compliance and weaker absorption, oral Finasteride is a superior option. The amount of medication is custom designed for each patient depending on the aggressiveness of balding, age, and potential for side effects. A baseline PSA and PSA monitoring are required and part of the program.
It’s important to note that due to the potential side effect of sexual dysfunction, Finasteride should only be taken within a medical TRT program. Our customized dosing creates the appropriate dosing regimen. It takes about four months to work, and a year is often necessary to determine its effectiveness. Studies show that 90% of men experience increased regrowth of hair or decreased loss, and photographs show improvement in hair growth in 50% of recipients at one year and in 65% at two years.
Another medication we offer is oral Minoxidil, which is an off-label use of an anti-hypertensive medication at low dosages. It’s effective in both men and women and has been shown to increase hair growth by increasing blood flow to the hair follicle. When tested head-to-head against topical Minoxidil (Rogaine), it’s been found to be at least as effective.
The combination of Finasteride and Minoxidil has been shown to be even more effective than either medication alone. Possible side effects of oral Minoxidil include an increase in heart rate, edema of feet, excessive hair growth, and headaches. Side effects increase with dosing, so low combo dosing is best.
